During March 11th through March 15th in stormy Seattle, the 2016 Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition was hosted by the American Red Cross and partner organizations International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Canadian Red Cross and the American Society of International Law. Sixteen teams representing law schools, military academies, and LLM programs from the U.S. and Canada came together to put their knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL) to the test through a simulation-based moot competition.
Teams were called on to role play members of the military advisers, government representatives, ICRC representatives, and members of non-governmental organizations. Students were challenged to bring IHL out of the books and into real-world scenarios testing both their legal knowledge and advocacy skills. The 2016 competing teams demonstrated strong knowledge of legal principles, relevant case law, and team work in round role plays.
