Bringing IHL to Life

The IHL Action Campaign Team at Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami, Florida, has chosen to include both Campaign subtopics for this year – torture and healthcare in danger. In presentations to our class, we explained how torture and health care in danger relate to international humanitarian law (IHL) through discussions and visual representation. We also played videos showing current events related to these subjects that gave our audience a better understanding of the concepts.

For example, we played a video about healthcare in danger in a small village in Syria that is currently under attack from opposing forces and rebels; this video allowed our audience to relate current situations to IHL rules and principles. Following the auditory, visual, and discussion based presentations, our team assembled a virtual interactive game to connect to our members and test their understanding. We used a $10 gift card incentive to a local store of their choice to boost interest, and it played out perfectly. We learned that the vast majority of our members had great understanding of IHL and had fun doing it. In summary, our presentations were a success.

Currently, our team is looking forward to our Raid Cross event, which will be held in a community park to reach out to more members along with veterans and the young marines organization. In this event, we will hold role-playing simulations of Raid Cross using the topics discussed in the presentations. Following that, we are planning an IHL movie night in which we will play a movie about war and discuss its relation to humanitarian law. These events and the rest of our Campaign, together with social media outreach, can guide us to a more aware society!
